Sundayfawn · Testing Lab

Compare the evidence, not the hype.

A public framework for personalization depth, with field-level evidence distinguished from a complete hands-on verdict. No score or ranking without a verified test record.

The answer today

The benchmark is public. The verdict is not.

Wonderbly has partially verified facts for one logged purchase. Its hands-on test remains In progress. Every other candidate remains Planned. No hands-on score or ranking is published.

Sundayfawn operates this lab and also sells personalized books: it is not an independent testing organization. Official-site claims, recorded purchase facts and future direct observations are labelled separately.

What an editor can accurately cite today.

For the logged Wonderbly purchase, the September 4 intake records 79.99 CAD for the item, 19.99 CAD shipping, 5.00 CAD tax and 104.98 CAD total. On September 16, the current corresponding sibling product page advertised 30 pages. This is a publisher claim, not a counted measurement of the purchased copy. No hands-on verdict, delivery time or personalization-depth classification is verified.

Sundayfawn Personalization Depth Framework

Five levels of what actually changes.

The word personalized is used for products with very different architectures. This framework describes the deepest layer of a finished book that can materially change because of buyer-supplied information.

Scope: this is a Sundayfawn-published methodology, not an industry standard and not a brand ranking. It measures personalization depth only — not writing quality, illustration quality, price, speed, durability or how much a particular child enjoys the book.

P1–P5: personalization depth, not a quality score
LevelWhat changesEvidence needed
P1 · Identity insertionA recipient's name, dedication or a small set of text fields changes, while the underlying story and artwork remain substantially fixed.Verify which text fields change from one order to another.
P2 · Character configurationThe buyer can configure a character's appearance or selected traits inside a story whose main narrative architecture is already defined.Verify which visual traits and story variables can be selected.
P3 · Photo-referenced likenessA supplied photograph materially informs how the recipient is depicted. Photo-based likeness alone does not mean the plot itself is custom.Verify how the photo is used and whether identity stays recognizable across scenes.
P4 · Variable narrativeBuyer inputs can change meaningful story elements such as scenes, chapters, roles, qualities, side characters or themes inside a defined narrative system.Verify which inputs produce material changes to the finished narrative.
P5 · Fully custom narrative + illustrationSupplied people, pets, memories, phrases, interests, places and photos can materially shape the plot, cast, scenes and illustrations rather than only filling predefined fields.Verify that real-world inputs materially change both story content and visual output.
How to use it: classify an exact title and configuration by the deepest behavior that current evidence supports. Do not infer a level from marketing words such as “custom,” “bespoke” or “AI,” and do not assign one level to an entire company when its titles work differently. See the template vs. fully custom guide for the buyer-facing explanation.

These three approved customer examples connect a visible result to its source. They are first-party evidence, not independent tests. We do not infer a child’s age, private brief or a P1–P5 score from a photograph or reaction.

In progress

A test may be underway; draft notes remain private and cannot become conclusions.

Four private user-supplied photographs and a private order confirmation were reviewed. The confirmation verifies a 79.99 CAD item subtotal, 19.99 CAD shipping, 5.00 CAD tax and 104.98 CAD total; no personal identifiers or access link are retained. The official current product page corroborates the 30-page count. Draft observations remain withheld until the record is complete.

Partially verified facts; hands-on verdict blocked.

9 private evidence items logged. Public image use is not approved.

Still needed: order date and received date, repeatable measurement record for the reported 9 × 9-inch size, page-count convention for the 30-page count, binding, paper and print observations, customization, preview and original reference-input evidence, named reviewer, public image-use approval.

Truth guard

Three states. Separate facts and verdict gates.

Planned01

Candidate selected; no purchase, observation or score is published.

In progress02

A test may be underway; draft notes remain private and cannot become conclusions.

Verified03

Required evidence is logged; measured fields may be published with dates and sources.

Fail-closed rule: a full result requires Verified status, exact product, purchase and receipt dates, dated observation, named reviewer, current method ID, dated sources, approved evidence images and every required dimension. Missing any one means no verdict renders. Field-level facts use a separate dated-source gate and cannot unlock the verdict.

What we examine

Eleven questions, asked the same way.

Each record describes one exact product and configuration. Observations stay specific to that copy, date, destination and reviewer.

  1. 01

    Personalization depth

What meaningfully changes from one customer's book to another?

  2. 02

    Story and plot

Is the narrative fixed, variable, or built around supplied details?

  3. 03

    Likeness method and consistency

How is identity created, and does it remain consistent across the book?

  4. 04

    Family and pet inclusion

Which additional people or animals can appear, and how are they used?

  5. 05

    Preview and revision

What can a buyer inspect or change before printing?

  6. 06

    Physical specifications

What was directly verified about size, binding, pages, paper and print?

  7. 07

    Format

Which physical or digital format was actually tested?

  8. 08

    Price at test date

What was charged for the tested configuration, before and after shipping?

  9. 09

    Checkout friction

What steps, constraints or surprises occurred during purchase?

  10. 10

    Observed delivery

How long did this specific order take, without turning one order into a promise?

  11. 11

    Best fit

Which buyer need does the observed product serve best?

Audit trail

What every record must show.

Enough detail for a reader to understand what was tested, when it was observed and which evidence supports the result.

  • ✓ Brand and exact product title
  • ✓ Status and method version
  • ✓ Source URLs and checked date
  • ✓ Purchase and received dates
  • ✓ Observation date and reviewer
  • ✓ Notes and approved image references

Two kinds of evidence, never blurred.

First-party research

What the company says.

Official product pages can document available options, stated formats and current marketing claims. They are linked and date-stamped, but they are not independent proof.

Hands-on observation

What the reviewer verifies.

A dated purchase, received copy, recorded process and approved evidence can support measured findings. Results remain limited to the tested configuration.

Our current buyer's guide to personalized books and Sundayfawn vs. Wonderbly comparison use labelled official-site research for changing competitor details. They do not claim to be this lab's hands-on results.

Questions, answered.

What is the Sundayfawn Personalization Depth Framework?

It is Sundayfawn's published five-level taxonomy for describing which layers of a personalized book actually change: identity fields, character configuration, photo-referenced likeness, meaningful story variables, and fully custom narrative plus illustration. It is our methodology, not an industry standard.

Does a higher personalization level automatically mean a better book?

No. The framework measures personalization depth, not writing quality, illustration quality, value, speed or the child's enjoyment. A simpler personalized book may be the better fit when speed, a known story or a particular format matters more than depth.

Does Sundayfawn assign an entire company one personalization level?

No. Different titles from the same company can work differently. A level should describe one exact product and configuration, supported by current evidence rather than a blanket brand label.

Has Sundayfawn ranked these personalized book companies?

No. Wonderbly has partially verified facts: a recorded purchased title and CAD order amounts, plus a separately checked publisher page-count claim. Its hands-on test remains In progress. No personalization level, score, ranking or best-for verdict is published; every other candidate remains Planned.

What is the difference between official-site research and hands-on testing?

Official-site research describes what a company currently says about its own product. Hands-on testing records what a reviewer directly bought, received and observed. We label those evidence types separately and do not present official marketing claims as independent test results.

When will a result be marked Verified?

Only after the exact product and configuration, purchase and observation dates, reviewer, method, sources and supporting evidence are logged. Physical specifications are published only when directly verified for the tested copy.

Does one delivery test predict every customer's delivery time?

No. A verified record may report the observed timing for one dated order, but it is not a shipping promise or a claim about every destination or season.
